| I trained originally as a painter and as I have enjoyed sewing since I was a child, working with textiles was a natural direction to take. I have been making quilts since 1976. My early work was very conventional and featured traditional designs using many patchwork and quilting techniques. Over recent years I have created original designs and have dyed or painted my own fabrics. It is wonderful to live in a time when we have have such a variety of art and craft products available to us that I am able to produce exactly the same effect that I draw and paint in my sketchbooks onto cloth. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

My inspiration comes from many sources. I look to painters old and new, the
lyrics of favourite songs and sometimes involve ideas taken from traditional
quilts. Words are extremely important to my design process. Most projects
begin with a brainstorming session of what the approach to a subject or challenge
could be. Making lists of descriptive words is a fantastic way of focussing
the mind. Perhaps strangely, I find that I need a working title for a piece
to be successful and so the name often arrives before the design is fully
conceived. Making the quilt is the least time consuming part! |
